Hontoon Island State Park

I decided to check out this floating park on the St. John River after hearing about it from a coworker. I dropped in at French Landing, turned right, and began to paddle.

Second drop in to the right and straight on until you hit the island

The river circles the island so you can do the complete paddle which is about -miles. I just paddle to the island and back which is about 7 miles round trip.

And because the river circles this island you can only get there by paddleboard/kayak, boat, or ferry. If you don't have a watercraft you can use the ferry to hop onto this little water-locked jungle. The ferry starts services at 8 am and stops 4 pm. For those taking the ferry you will meet at this address: 2309 River Ridge Road , DeLand, FL, United States, Florida. It will only take a few minutes to cross the channel.

*As of right now (6/4/2023) the ferry isn't running, but will update when it is. You can also call (386) 736-5309 to check in and see when operations have resumed.*

There is no entrance fee for this park!

I paddled on the St. John River to get to the park, which is to the east of the island, if you begin the circle around it becomes the Hontoon Dead River on the west side, turning into Snake Creek as you hug the island back to Blue Springs.

Here is a map for reference

This is the path I took. It was about 7 miles round trip

At Hontoon Island there is a dock that you can pull up and tie off to. If you are visiting and don't have a watercraft but want to explore the island from the water, they do have kayaks available to rent.

There are trails to explore and picnic tables under trees to enjoy some shade, food, and views.

You can also camp out on the island but you need to make a reservation. They have tent sites and cabins available to book.

I only explored a small portion of this park, but can't wait to go back to learn and see more!
